It seems that the wedding bug has bitten Hong Kong celebrities.

First, actor Tony Leung made an honest woman of his long-time love, actress Carina Lau.

Last month, actress Michelle Reis married tycoon Julian Hui.

Now Hong Kong singer-actor Andy Lau has also popped the question to his Malaysian girlfriend Carol Chu.

The couple has kept their romance under wraps for the past 23 years.

They plan to tie the knot next year, according to The Star.

The couple, who got to know each other in 1985, have chosen Pulau Redang in Terengganu, as the site for their lavish wedding ceremony to avoid the paparazzi.

Island wedding

Hong Kong magazine ‘Three Weekly’ reported that the 47-year-old Lau got the idea of getting married on the resort island from his buddy Tony Leung.

The magazine reported that Andy had been vehemently denying his relationship with Chu because he was afraid that his fans would not support him.

Early this year, the media had a field day when Chu turned up at Lau’s concert early.

Her appearance fulled the rumour mill that Andy would acknowledge their relationship.

During a concert last month, Andy set tongues wagging when he asked his fans if idols could have girlfriends and get married.

His fans greeted his question with cheers and responded that he should openly show his love for Chu.

Andy was said to have used that statement as a test of his fans’ reaction towards his marriage plans.

Chu’s romance with Andy is believed to have started not long after she was named a second runner-up in a beauty contest in 1985.

Happy

In May this year, Andy was spotted at the wedding ceremony of Chu’s sister in Kuala Lumpur.

When contacted by the press over the news, Andy’s former Taiwanese girlfriend, Yu Ke Xin said: ‘I am very happy for him. It is time he settles down.’
