(SINGAPORE) Good news for telcos and pub owners: a new survey of 32,000 football fans worldwide - including nearly 1,500 in Singapore - has found that 98 per cent follow the popular Barclays Premier League (BPL) regularly, with many getting their daily fix through the television, Internet and even their mobile phones.

And despite having the sports channels on pay-TV at home, one in four fans said they would still willingly head to a pub whenever a major match is being broadcast ‘live’.

Four in five fans here, meanwhile, said that, besides newspapers, they rely on the Internet and their mobile devices to keep up to speed with the latest exploits of their favourite BPL team.

These were just some of the findings released yesterday from a new survey carried out by BPL title sponsors Barclays, which involved fans from 185 countries.

The average Singaporean spends more than five hours a week following the action (34 per cent). TV is the favoured medium for following a live match (88 per cent), while 77 per cent said newspapers were their preferred choice for getting the latest news and match results.

When Singaporeans were asked what was the most important activity in their lives, 39 per cent said ‘football’ - second only to ‘family matters’ (61 per cent).

Globally, a staggering 80 per cent of fans said ‘football’ was the most regular topic of conversation, while 49 per cent said it was more important to them than even family and partners.

Comparatively, just a quarter said they would rather discuss issues like love or relationships, while 20 per cent said the economy was their usual conversation topic. More than one in two fans also picked football as the ideal ice-breaker topic when meeting a stranger for the first time.

Singaporeans were unanimous with their peers worldwide in declaring who their favourite player was, with Liverpool’s Spanish striker Fernando Torres topping the vote with 50 per cent. His team-mate Steven Gerrard was second (47 per cent) and Manchester United’s newly- crowned European ‘Player of the Year’ Cristiano Ronaldo came in third (32 per cent).

Among the other findings that characterise the Singaporean supporter:

• Liverpool is the most popular BPL club here with 39 per cent of fans supporting them, followed closely by defending champions Manchester United (36 per cent);

• Anfield (39 per cent) is their favourite stadium;

• Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson is their favourite manager (37 per cent);

• Russian national coach Guus Hiddink is the manager they would most like to see managing a BPL club (31 per cent);

• Fast, flowing football is their favourite style of how the game should be played (54 per cent).

When it comes to shelling out the cash to show their support, 66 per cent of BPL fans in Singapore said they owned at least one replica jersey - the most popular form of club merchandise - followed by posters (37 per cent).
