The Chinese Internet sensation known as “Kappa Girl” has been detained by police in Shanghai after attempting to cash in on her popularity as an online porn star by selling off interviews for big bucks.

“Kappa Girl,” whose surname is Huang, became an online celebrity in China last month after posting a 12-minute pornographic film in which she performed “sex acts,” as described by the state newspaper China Daily.

“It soon became one of the most popular downloads on the mainland, with thousands of people downloading it last month,” local police said in a statement.

Huang set up a blog an offered to sell interviews for up to 30,000 yuan ($4,383) apiece, according to the blog Shanghaiist, sister blog to the New York City Web site Gothamist.

She offered modelling gigs for 50,000 yuan and appearances at bars for 20,000 yuan.

“Kappa Girl” quickly became one of the most-searched Google terms in China, where pornography is illegal but widely available online and via bootlegged DVDs.

Huang was fired from her job at a department store after the video spread across the Web, Shanghaiist reported, after viral fans tracked down her personal information and posted it online.

It was not immediately clear what legal actions Huang will face in police detention.
