HK Actress Michelle Reis’ wedding costs $20 million

25 November 2008

Seven gowns including five from Valentino, a spanking new Rolls Royce to pick up the bride, fresh flowers imported from Holland, and a generous serving of caviar and white truffles in the banquet.

In all, the high-profile wedding of Hong Kong actress Michele Reis, 38, and wealthy magnate Julian Hui, 46, on Sunday came up to about HK$100 million ($20 million), reported Apple Daily.

The extravagance was said to have been deliberate to eclipse the HK$30 million reportedly spent in the wedding of Tony Leung and Carina Lau in July.

Lau was once engaged to Mr Hui. His marriage to Reis is his second marriage.

Reis, who was Miss Hong Kong 1988, and Mr Hui, a descendant of a shipping magnate, have been together for two years.

Although Reis’ ring only had an 8-carat diamond compared to the 12-carat band that Lau received from Leung, Mr Hui and Reis’ wedding made an impression in other respects.

For instance, the media was well taken care of. Besides a lunch box, each member of the media at their wedding also received a HK$1,000 hongbao.

The wedding took place in the Huis’ lush mansion in Hong Kong’s scenic beachside of Shek O.

Garlands made from Holland-imported white and purple roses adorned the sprawling grounds. On the main gate, the flowers were arranged in the shape of two Ms, which stood for ‘Me and Michele’.

At noon, Mr. Hui picked the bride up from her home in Jardine’s Lookout in a HK$5.5 million Rolls Royce with two seven-seater saloons as escorts.

Reis wore a pastel pink gown from Valentino’s 2009 spring collection while the groom was sharply decked out in a Tom Ford suit.

A posse of 20 security guards made sure that over-zealous reporters and photographers were kept at bay when the couple arrived at the mansion, during which a minor scuffle occurred.

But after the couple made their way safely into the mansion, they spent the afternoon taking wedding photos in the garden and by the swimming pool.

Later in the day, a representative from the couple’s wedding planner came out of the mansion to hand out hongbao to the media .

The representative said that the couple shed tears during the solemnisation ceremony, and after saying ‘I do’, Mr. Hui lifted Michele’s veil and they kissed for a full 20 seconds.

One of Michele’s two wedding dresses was a Bellantuono gown from Italy, which reportedly took 40 seamstresses over 200 hours to complete. It costs HK$1million.

At the banquet, Reis changed into more gowns, all from Valentino, which she bought for a total of HK$5 million.

The ex files

Well-wishers of the newlyweds include model Gaile Lok, who is currently attached to singer Leon Lai, Reis’ ex-beau.

But at least one public figure - casino tycoon Stanley Ho - expressed his displeasure.

Mr. Ho, whose daughter is divorced from Mr. Hui, has been pouring vitriol over his former son-in-law. On Sunday, Mr. Ho said he hoped that their marriage would be a short one.

When asked if he thinks this would be Mr. Hui’s last marriage, Mr. Ho replied: ‘It’s hard to say. Maybe he will remarry eight to 10 times, we can’t say for sure.’

Earlier, he had told reporters that he wouldn’t attend the wedding even if Mr. Hui invited him. He also thanked Reis for marrying Mr. Hui, and helping to ‘get rid of trouble’ for his family.

Mr. Hui had married Mr. Ho’s daughter Pansy in 1991, but they separated after nine years. Pansy signed the divorce papers in July.
