A Briton who reeked of alcohol kicked a police officer on the leg after being arrested for allegedly molesting a woman.
Recruitment consultant Luke Raymond Chapman was yesterday sentenced to four weeks in jail.
The 31-year-old was detained by security officers at Esplanade Mall last September over claims he had outraged the woman’s modesty.
Corporal Amirul Haikal Khairudin, who was on patrol in the area, then arrived with two colleagues. After being told Chapman was aggressive and smelt strongly of alcohol, the policeman arrested him.
While Chapman was being escorted away, he kicked a police car, although there was no visible damage. Cpl Amirul and his partners held the Briton’s shoulder and pulled him towards another police car.
Without warning, the recruitment consultant kicked Cpl Amirul’s right leg. The officers then used reasonable force to put him into the vehicle, the court heard.
Chapman pleaded guilty to causing hurt to a public servant.
Defence lawyer A. Sangeetha said his actions were wholly out of character.
She added that the Briton’s employer, Ideal Healthcare, had given him very good character references and was prepared to let him keep his job. Chapman has since given up binge drinking.
Arguing for a jail sentence, Deputy Public Prosecutor Shaun Lee said kicking a policeman showed a blatant disregard for the law. As a mature professional, Chapman should know the consequences of his actions, he said.
The Briton, who was wearing a suit in court, was cleared of molesting a 29-year-old woman and punching a 22-year-old waiter after compounding the cases for $5,000 and $500 respectively.
