The government will continue to provide former minister mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong with the necessary staff support to carry out their official work, even though they are no longer part of the Singapore Cabinet.
In a short statement issued to the media yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that such staff support would enable them to go about their official duties when called upon by the government.
The staff will also help Mr. Lee in his role as senior adviser to the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, as well as for Mr. Goh who is the senior adviser to the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Each of them will have one special assistant and a press secretary on a part-time basis, in addition to one secretary and two clerical officers who will assist them full-time.
‘Mr. Lee and Mr. Goh continue to make significant contributions to Singapore, especially internationally,’ said PMO. ‘They have strong personal relationships with many world leaders. Their views remain widely sought after by political and business leaders, prominent thinkers and the foreign media.’
Both Mr. Lee and Mr. Goh will, from time to time, travel overseas to meet leaders, engage investors and speak at conferences, said PMO.
‘These activities raise Singapore’s international profile and promote our political and economic interests. Their staff will help them to carry out these functions,’ it said.
Both Mr. Lee and Mr. Goh jointly announced their decision to step down from Cabinet on May 14, exactly a week after the general election. They are still Members of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar and Marine Parade group representation constituencies respectively.
Since retiring from office, both have remained active by attending a number of prominent events both locally and abroad.
Mr. Lee, for instance, spoke at the FutureChina Global Forum in Singapore on Monday. He was also recently appointed a Distinguished Fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.
Mr. Goh, meanwhile, travelled to Tokyo last month where he was conferred one of Japan’s most prestigious awards for his numerous contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries over the years.
Incidentally, Mr. Lee and Mr. Goh are scheduled to attend the upcoming South Asian Diaspora Convention in Singapore. The inaugural event on July 21-22 will see Mr. Goh and President SR Nathan attend a gala dinner on the first night while Mr. Lee is expected to participate in a dialogue session the next day.
