A 22-YEAR-OLD man who took part in a gang rape six years ago flew back to China on Friday to give himself up to police, the Pudong airport immigration authority said yesterday.
The Zhejiang Province native, whom police would identify only by his surname, Zhu, was accompanied by his father. They had flown from Italy, where Zhu and his family have been living for the past six years.
Three of Zhu’s friends have already been sentenced for the rape, which took place on May 1, 2002.
That evening, friends held an early celebration for Zhu’s 16th birthday. When the party was over, Zhu and three friends were drunk. They bumped into a woman on the street and raped her, police said. At the time, Zhu, his younger brother and their father had just received approval to move to Italy to live with Zhu’s mother. Zhu left China on May 6, 2002, before police were able to arrest him.
But on May 12 this year, the date of Zhu’s 22nd birthday, he and his younger brother were involved in a car accident on an expressway in Italy. His brother was killed and Zhu lost a leg.
Zhu allegedly said he had been tortured by guilt over the rape and that he believed the accident which killed his brother was a punishment for the crime he committed six years before.
“I could not live the rest of my life like this,” he reportedly said. “I should have been the one to be punished instead of my little brother. My grandmother is in her 70s in China and I am her only grandson now. I had to come back sooner or later.”
One of his three accomplices was sentenced to 13 years in jail for the rape. The other two received shorter terms. Unlike Zhu, the three other men were adults at the time of the crime.
