Shanghai men attracted to plump women
A survey by a matchmaking website has confirmed a long-held suspicion — that Shanghai men prefer chubby, well-rounded women compared to their brethren elsewhere in China.
A survey by a matchmaking website has confirmed a long-held suspicion — that Shanghai men prefer chubby, well-rounded women compared to their brethren elsewhere in China.
The website surveyed 18,019 people across China about their preference of the opposite sex.
Among those surveyed who prefer plump women, about 20 percent were Shanghainese, the highest nationwide. And among those who were attracted by big breasts, 17 percent were from Shanghai, second only to men in Guangdong Province.
The survey, conducted by jiayuan.com, also found local men were attracted by women’s buttocks and eyes.
“Women with big eyes can trigger men’s protective desires, and it is believed that women with big eyes are usually tender,” said Zhang Jiarui, a consultant with the website.
With South Korean romance dramas like “My Love from the Star” enjoying huge popularity on TV, more female respondents said they prefer men with long legs and small eyes.
A Shanghai woman, surnamed Zhang, said she thought men with small eyes are more charming and smarter based on physiognomy. But she also suspected there are more playboys among them as well, making it difficult to maintain a relationship.
Overall, only 8 percent of male respondents said they like women with short hair.
Zhang said short-haired women are seen as independent and capable like nu han zi (strong, independent women), giving an impression that they are not easy to get along with.
For many Chinese women, a pointed chin is beautiful. Many of them have even gone under the knife to look like popular movie stars. However, a woman with a pointed chin are usually seen as being self-willed and arrogant, Zhang said.
Eighty-eight percent of men prefer women with light skin, with Beijing residents showing the biggest degree of preference.
On the other hand, more than 50 percent of women said they like men with sun-tanned skin, with those from Fujian and Henan provinces showing the biggest preference.
About 67 percent of the male respondents said breasts are the sexiest part of women, followed by legs and rear. Overall, they believed the sexiest women are those with a unique temperament, graceful behaviour and a plump body shape.
Women find eyes and muscles the sexiest part about men.
Men who work hard, do sports and help with housework are viewed as sexy by women, according to the survey.
