Sex-scandal official held over graft
A Guangxi tobacco official was arrested yesterday on corruption charges, days after his diary describing sex with women and bribe-taking was leaked online and caused a national outcry.
A Guangxi tobacco official was arrested yesterday on corruption charges, days after his diary describing sex with women and bribe-taking was leaked online and caused a national outcry.
Han Feng, 53, was arrested for accepting 482,000 yuan (HK$547,600) and an apartment worth 300,000 yuan when he was head of tobacco monopoly authorities in Qinzhou and Laibin from 2002, a notice posted on the official website of the People’s Procuratorate in Guangxi said.
It said Han had taken advantage of his position and received bribes when giving out several government construction contracts from 2002 to February this year.
The announcement did not say whether Han, the incumbent sales department head of the Guangxi Tobacco Monopoly Administration, was sacked.
It said the procuratorate started to investigate Han’s case from Tuesday and formally arrested him yesterday. The case is still under investigation.
Earlier reports said Han had been suspended from his post after a probe by the Communist Party’s disciplinary watchdog.
Han is a household name in the mainland’s vibrant internet community after a string of explicit diary items, allegedly written by him, were posted online earlier this month.
In his diary, Han gave detailed accounts of sex with five of his female subordinates and colleagues, the amount of bribes he took from business partners and friends, as well as their excessive drinking sessions in 2007 and 2008.
Real names of the parties involved are given in his diary.
It is unclear why Han’s diary was posted on the internet but the juicy details sparked a national outcry.
The identities, including photos and profiles, of some of the women mentioned in the notes were exposed on some internet forums after internet users launched a vigilante-type data search, or “human flesh search”.
The internet frenzy about Han is not over as internet users make use of the scandal to satirise the rampant corruption among officials.
Famous blogger Han Han mockingly said Han Feng was “actually a good cadre” compared to many others - because he did not squander public money on prostitutes and mistresses and the amount of bribes he received was relatively small compared to others being arrested.
“Han Feng just had affairs with some women. He neither keep mistresses nor spent public money to support the women’s living, which is far different from other corrupt officials,” Han Han wrote in his blog.
“Indeed, he just received 60,000 yuan within half a year, according to his diary.”
