The Cambridge University student who hurled a shoe at Premier Wen Jiabao during a speech last week has apologised to China for his inappropriate behaviour, the Chinese ambassador in London has said.

In a statement on the Chinese embassy’s website, ambassador Fu Ying said she had received a written apology addressed to Mr. Wen from the student.

The letter was delivered by university vice-chancellor Alison Richard, who offered formal apologies in person on behalf of the university on Friday.

Ms. Fu said Mr. Wen had forgiven the student, and suggested the university should give him an opportunity to continue his studies.

According to The Daily Telegraph in Britain, the 27-year-old student from Germany could end up with a criminal record and be suspended from the university.

But Ms. Fu quoted Mr. Wen as saying: “Education is the best help for a young student. It is hoped that the university will give the student an opportunity to continue his studies at the university.

“As a Chinese saying goes, it is more precious than gold for a young person to redress a mistake. It is hoped that this student will see his mistake and seek to understand a real and developing China.”

The ambassador also suggested the student could learn more about China.

“The inappropriate behaviour ... was met with strong indignation not only from the audience, but also among the Chinese people. It has also affected the image and reputation of Cambridge in China,” she said. “I have taken note of the fact that the said student has written to express apologies for his actions and the University of Cambridge has promptly taken a clear stand on the matter, which is being handled in all seriousness. From the words and actions of this student, it could be seen that he lacks knowledge about China.”
