Police officer kills man in off-duty brawl
A Yunnan police officer has been detained on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter after he killed an unarmed man in an off-duty brawl, triggering a public outcry on the mainland, Xinhua reported yesterday.

Ji Zhongchun, from the Mengzi county police bureau, was driving to a friend’s house after a night of drinking late on Friday when his private car nearly hit another vehicle.
An argument erupted between Ji and the other driver, Pan Jun, that quickly escalated into a brawl. Ji took out his pistol and fired three shots at Pan after realising his nose had been broken. Pan died despite efforts by an ambulance crew to save him.
The incident has once again thrown the spotlight on police brutality and their excessive use of firearms - a focus of public discontent in recent years.
It has also called into question the role of the police force on the mainland as authorities try to keep a grip on power amid public disillusionment over social justice.
A university student was killed last November in a brawl between several students and six off-duty police officers at a nightclub in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, sparking a heated debate on the internet over police cruelty.
The latest case also made headlines on the internet, prompting authorities in the prefecture governing Mengzi county to set up a taskforce to look into the incident.
An unidentified top official from the prefecture’s police bureau was quick to dismiss the incident as just a crime by an individual officer, but admitted it would have a negative impact on public perception of the police.
The official promised more discipline for police officers and that the incident would be dealt with in accordance with the law, to do justice to the family of the victim.
